A successful business is always looking for ways to reduce costs, increase sales, and increase profits. One way to reduce costs--especially in an era of health care costs rising much faster than inflation--is to reduce the number of workers with benefits. Provided the technology is cheaper in the long run than labor, technology will win--provided consumers accept it. But we're totally fine with self checkout lanes at supermarkets, self-serve gas stations, and ATMs. While an increased minimum wage would, theoretically, increase this incentive for businesses, I don't know how large the practical effect would be. For instance, he cites tablets that replace order takers at fast food restaurants. This being done to reduce costs while maintaining a similar customer experience. Do you see this as an issue moving forward? Will increases in minimum wage lead to increases in job displacing technologies? I would make a joke about Rise of the Robots but I'll refrain for now.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009048517541088648.post-70182637224140464962014-01-29T17:16:56.933-05:002014-01-29T17:16:56.933-05:00A good question. I think that Obama is acting unilaterally to (a) move off the status quo--something that, as you know, is improbable in our current Congress; and (b) to put pressure on (a future) Congress to raise it for everyone else. I read a study (you might check chapter 8 of "Unequal Democracy" by Bartels) that discussed the issue you're talking about. In any event, you might also try looking at some of the studies mentioned in here: http://www.raisetheminimumwage.com/pages/job-loss.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08514628393282040088noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009048517541088648.post-32003659269915995332014-01-29T16:48:44.501-05:002014-01-29T16:48:44.501-05:00Obama mentions only a wage increase for federally ...Obama mentions only a wage increase for federally contracted workers. Would the private sector (or at least those sectors that may perform similar duties as the federally contracted workers) increase their own wages in order to avoid a labor shift? Or does the private sector already pay out more money than may otherwise be made by the federal contract workers?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009048517541088648.post-572054688075926502014-01-21T16:13:53.910-05:002014-01-21T16:13:53.910-05:00I wanted to highlight that if Gov. The Benghazi situation doesn't strike me as one where administration officials were acting on their own authority and undermining the President. I'm still waiting for an explanation about the supposes protest over a video that has repeatedly been refuted, yet still this administration has yet to offer a plausible reason for the video protest idea, explain where if came from, or explain why Ambassador Stevens was not protected in his time of need. And we still have no account of where the Commander in Chief was during the attack, or why he failed to act. At least Christie apologized and fired those responsible.Nathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08938372568510917283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4009048517541088648.post-8041670900435280232013-06-24T14:37:08.853-04:002013-06-24T14:37:08.853-04:00 Dan, I liked your article very much and agree wit... Dan, I liked your article very much and agree with everything you mentioned in it. It is also noteworthy that Brazil and Turkey have another commonality.
